Celebrating Natural Beauty

Headshot of Jack Debertin, owner and craftsman of Up the Hill Woodworks, smiling in his workshop with woodworking tools and w

I have been an educator for nearly 30 years, working with elementary and middle school students. Each September, I help them become the best versions of themselves, guiding them in setting and achieving academic goals and supporting them through inevitable challenges until I let them go in June. I hope they emerge more knowledgeable about the world and themselves and equipped with valuable skills. This journey is enriching, even after so many years, though I never expect my students to feel “done”, as learning and self-discovery continue.

What attracted me to woodworking nearly 20 years ago was the sense of completion that comes from transforming a pile of rough lumber into a finished product—a table, bed, clock, or jewelry box. While I find great satisfaction in working with wood, an abundant and excellent medium in Wisconsin, I genuinely enjoy seeing the final result. I believe I appreciate this even more because of my career as an educator.

My end tables, sofa tables, plant stands, nightstands, clocks, and cutting boards all have similar and somewhat simple designs. This is intentional. I pride myself on finding beautiful and unique woods to work with and then allowing the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. As I progress as a woodworker, learn new techniques, and begin to make different styles of products, I know one thing will remain the same: my work will always feature and highlight the natural beauty of wood.

I hope you enjoy my work and that my creations inspire you.
